Language Acquisition (Primary & Secondary)

Having worked in primary, secondary and 3rd language environments, Mr. Kiefer has observed students of all races and backgrounds on 3 different continents struggle to acquire language.  Among the challenges of acquiring language are making meaning of new vocabulary as well as finding meaning in idiomatic expressions while personalizing ones learning.  Providing the opportunity to practice and practical application of terms or phrases is necessary for internalization in order to find meaning while navigating ones language development.  One of the methods that Mr. Kiefer has found to be extremely successful is utilizing technology to practice, rehearse and self-evaluate through play in games that promote fluency (timed exercises).  One of the many sites that his students enjoy, which provides that practical application while increasing fluency is "Quizlet.com". Several of the 6th grade Language Arts, Science , Social Studies and Foreign Language lessons have been uploaded as Study Guides and can be easily accessed by searching "pkiefer205" on the Quizlet.com website search bar.

Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses

The practice of identifying student weaknesses has been associated with providing students with the most appropriate education in the least restrictive environment since the inception of Public law 94-142. However, we are now finding that in focusing solely on weaknesses, we lose the opportunity to build self-efficacy through accentuating ones strengths.

Some of the most successful people on the planet have learned how to excel in their fields not by focusing on their weaknesses but rather by engaging their strengths to optimize their success.

"There is now compelling evidence that regular physical activity is associated with significant physiological, psychological and social benefit..."
